Jun. 20--Dare County Commissioners decided Monday to slightly raise taxes, in part to send more money to schools. The 2006- 07 budget the commissioners unanimously approved gives the schools $2.3 million more than last year through a 1-cent tax increase. The budget takes effect July 1. Educators say that means no Dare County teacher will lose his or her job, a cut that seemed probable a few weeks ago. Schools will lay off as many as 24 teacher assistants, however, and 20 of 24 teaching positions left open by resignations and retirement will not be filled. That means class sizes will get bigger.
