Jun. 18--Sedgwick County will not build a landfill in the northeast part of the county near Furley, primarily because of opposition from Raytheon Aircraft, said County Commissioner Dave Unruh.

The county may abandon all plans of building a landfill anywhere in the county rather than go through another decade-long fight with residents, he said.

Wichita's trash is now taken to a landfill owned by Waste Connections, 45 miles southwest of Wichita in Harper County.

"It doesn't seem wise to go through the process of acquiring land and spending millions of dollars" when there is a landfill in Harper County, Unruh said.…
