Jun. 17--STOCKTON -- Getting into your car and clicking on a seat belt happens as automatically as breathing. It's not the same for a slim yet vocal number of motorcyclists who grunt defiantly while cinching on helmets, as California law requires.

When Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Monday plowed his bike -- sans helmet -- into a car pulling in front of him at a Pittsburgh intersection, he cracked facial bones, chipped teeth and, without knowing it, reignited a debate on helmet laws.
