As a registered architect, reading "R Is for Architect" (May 2005, page 25) brought back memories that are not all that nostalgic. [Many factors] delayed me from completing IDP [requirements] and the ARE before seven years had passed since my eligibility. In Cheryl Weber's words, "Life happens."
While many of us can tell tales of firms' support or nonsupport, I believe the root problem of only half of all architecture graduates becoming licensed is the overall NCARB-mandated process. Can it be any more obvious that the entire process of becoming an architect is turning away some of America's most talented and brightest thinkers?
If the ARE is pass/fail, why not allow the exam to be taken after the third year of accredited architecture school? I believe that if the same exams were given to registered architects, five years out, who did not study, pass/fail rates ...
