Jun. 9--Physicians in Montgomery applauded the approval of a new vaccine that helps protect women against cervical cancer.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that Gardasil, a vaccine created by Merck & Co. Inc., could be used by woman ages 9 to 26. The drug works by preventing infection by four strains of the human papilomavirus, or HPV, the sexually transmitted virus that can cause the cancer.
