At the NHRA event at Heartland Park Topeka, anyone who didn't believe in jinxes would have been tempted to change their opinion when the No.1 qualifiers in both Top Fuel and Funny Car failed to go the distance for the ninth time in nine races in 2006.
Melanie Troxel earned low qualifier honors in Top Fuel, but it was Doug Kalitta picking up the event win by barely outrunning Brandon Bernstein in the final round, 4.675 seconds at 310.98 mph to 4.691/307.09. Kalitta has won three of the last four national events and has handed Bernstein his only two career final-round defeats.
