FUTURE SHOCK
With users switching to electronic access to resources instead of books, and using search engines instead of librarians to track down information, libraries face a struggle to remain relevant.
But the fightback has begun. Many libraries are reinventing themselves physically to meet changing needs. The most innovative are reflecting the changing services they offer by redeveloping or even rebuilding the library space. Redesigned libraries are often more informal, with audiovisual and group learning facilities, and sofas and cafes replacing rows of desks and shelves.
