Travel: Beyond Room Service and a Movie
When Belgian entrepreneur Kandy Tshibanda used to travel for work, he had a nightly routine: go to hotel, eat dinner, watch TV, get ready for bed. But on one recent trip to Switzerland's Art Deco Hotel Montana in Lucerne, he performed a saxophone solo. Hotel guests are invited to bring their own instruments to play during the Thursday night jam session starting at 9:30 p.m. "People had trumpets and instruments in the trunks of their cars," he says.
Hotel entertainment has suddenly gotten a lot more interesting. Pay-per-view movies and lounge singers are giving way to fashion shows and chocolate bars as hoteliers realize that a bored guest is an unhappy one--and that an engaged one will spend more money. Known as "lifestyle hotels," most are small boutiques. Italy's Park Hotel Mignon offers nightly swimming with underwater music from 7 to 10 p.m. (hotelmignon.com ). In addition to impromptu jazz, the Hotel Montana ( hotel-montana. ch ) holds Astro Dinners, where every month a radio-show host talks about one zodiac sign over dinner.
The larger chains are starting to catch on. The Four Seasons in Prague offers marionette classes (fourseasons.com/prague ). The flying trapeze at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Macau is "popular as a team-building activity," says director Christina Vong (mandarinoriental. com/macau ). Jumeirah Beach Club Resort & Spa in Dubai sets up carpets on the beach and waiter service for guests to watch an outdoor movie (jumeirahbeachclub.com ).
The events also draw locals. Berlin's Hotel Adlon Kempinski (hotel-adlon.de ) holds lectures in German during Berlin's opera season and the Iguazu Grand Hotel in Buenos Aires conducts tango classes (iguazugrandhotel.com ). Greece's Mykonos Grand Hotel & Resort (slh.org ) turns the outdoor amphitheater into a movie venue. That way, locals can feel like they're on holiday and guests can forget they're far from home.
