Jun. 6--Less than a year after taking the helm at Alisal High in Salinas, principal John Ramirez announced he is leaving for Visalia.

The principal, a graduate of Alisal, was responsible for concerted efforts to improve Alisal's academic standings and change its image as a tough school in East Salinas.

Just before the school year started, Ramirez, 34, removed the chain link fence that once surrounded Alisal, saying that the fence served no purpose but to perpetuate a negative stereotype of the school.
