May 31--A 9-year-old Mooresville boy died in a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 74 near Whiteville Monday morning as he and his dad were returning from a Memorial Day weekend trip to the beach, police said. Joseph McPike, a fourth grader at Mooresville Intermediate School, died instantly of head injuries in the 11:10 a.m. wreck, Trooper J.L. Hammonds of the State Highway Patrol said this morning. Joseph's father, Joel McPike, had looked to his right to talk to his son and when he looked back at the road, he noticed he'd come upon a slow moving truck and swerved to avoid it, Hammonds said.
