Did you know that the average human head has about 100,000 hairs? About 90 percent of this hair is actively growing while the other 10 percent is in a resting or falling-out phase. It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs daily. Hair growth, normally occurring at a rate of about 1/2, inch per week, can be affected by fever, illness, diet, drugs, or hormonal abnormalities. However, most hair loss in children is usually caused by one of four following conditions.

The most common of these conditions is called tinea capitis. This disease is caused by a fungal infection of the scalp. The infected child will usually have only a few small patches of mild hair loss. However, …
