Nearly 40 percent of American elementary schools have eliminated or are considering eliminating recess, despite experts' conclusions that playtime can be just as vital to a child's social, emotional and educational development as classroom time.
Enter the National Parent Teacher Association and Cartoon Network, which in early March introduced a campaign to reinstate recess in schools across the country. The campaign was developed with direction from an advisory board of leaders and policymakers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Education Association, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, New Leaders for New Schools and Health MPowers.
