'Samson' captures Derby

Meisho Samson moved one win away from becoming the second triple crown champion in as many years by capturing the Japan Derby on Sunday with a powerful stretch run.

Ridden by veteran Mamoru Ishibashi, Meisho Samson blew past Admire Main just before the finish to win the 2,400-meter race at a rain-soaked Tokyo Racecourse in 2 minutes 27.9 seconds.

Admire Main was a neck behind in second, while Dream Passport was another two lengths back in third place.
