Meisho Samson and jockey Mamoru Ishibashi pulled off a surprise victory in the opening leg of the triple crown series for 3-year-old horses.

The pair won't be catching anybody off guard this time in today's Japan Derby, the Triple Crown's blue ribbon race at Tokyo Racecourse.

Sired by Opera House, Meisho Samson had never won a Grade 1 race and went off as the sixth favorite in winning the Satsuki Sho on April 16. Ishibashi was more of a long shot as he had never won a G-1 race in his 22-year career.
