Japan is set to resume imports of American beef in June after the latest ban for fear of mad cow disease infection, government officials said.

Experts from both countries have agreed in recent talks in Tokyo that meat processing facilities are prepared to meet the conditions for Japan's resumption of imports of U.S. beef.

Tokyo and Washington are poised to settle the dispute to avert fresh bilateral economic friction before Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visits the United States in late June.

However, some Japanese consumers remain strongly opposed to the resumption of American beef imports.
