Personal information on 26.5 million veterans is stolen, raising ID theft fears.

May 23--State and federal officials are advising veterans to be on guard against identity theft, as Social Security numbers and personal information for up to 26.5 million vets were among electronic data stolen from a federal employee's home.

Florida's 1.8 million veterans will receive letters soon, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said Monday, notifying them of the breach and advising them how to protect themselves.

Veterans service organizations also have been alerted and asked to inform their members, said Earl Daniell, spokesman for the state Department of Veterans Affairs.

Those potentially affected include anyone discharged after 1975, and any veteran who…
