Higher Education foresees a lack of visionary leaders
Tracey Caldwell
The shortage of visionary library leaders is getting worse. Library and information service associations Sconul and Ucisa (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) have joined forces with the British Library to plug the skills gap and train the leaders of the future through a new Future Leaders Programme.
Jan Wilkinson, head of HE at the British Library, said: "There is a danger that good people are not coming up through the ranks. I have been a university librarian at the University of Leeds. I had to fill senior appointments at that institution and sat on interview panels at other universities. It is very clear to me that there is a shortage."
She added: "The British Library has a leadership position within the profession. That is why we have got involved in this."
Peter Tinson, executive secretary of Ucisa, said the development of leadership training was driven partly by a review carried out at Birmingham University.
