Big players get sociable
Announcements last month of information industry acquisitions indicate that recent innovations in social computing -- such as blogs and wikis -- are coming of age.
AOL revealed it had agreed to buy Weblogs Inc, a network of 85 blogs covering specialist subjects, such as babycare, cars and gadgets. Weblogs Inc has successfully yoked together individual blogs and advertising revenues, and is particularly attractive to AOL as it tries to counter the decline in paid subscribers.
This announcement was closely followed by the news that internet infrastructure provider VeriSign is to acquire Moreover Technologies. Moreover, founded by former FT journalist and serial entrepreneur Nick Denton, distributes real-time news and business information harvested from the web. Essentially, it created a new model for provision of aggregated content.
