FT embargo to "definitely" go ahead this autumn
The Financial Times has insisted that it will go ahead with a content embargo "sometime this autumn" after abandoning its original decision to enforce it on 31 August 2005. The embargo will delay feeds of its content to news aggregators, such as Factiva and LexisNexis, until after noon on the day of publication, forcing business users that depend on its market information to subscribe to the newspaper or FT.com. Joanna Manning-Cooper, director of communications at the FT, told IWR that the embargo would "definitely" happen, although further discussions with aggregators were still on-going. She said: "Following feedback from clients, our planned distributor content embargo is delayed in order to give us and our distributors more time to discuss alternative solutions to meet the needs of mutual customers." She refused to go into any further detail, and would not put a definite date on the embargo's implementation.

Semantic meaning at Talis
Library automation tools will be at the centre of the semantic web, according to Talis, the UK library automation specialist. Talis has hired Paul Miller from the Common Information Environment (CIE) project, which is jointly funded by JISC and the British Library, to spearhead its semantic web ambitions. The semantic web is a new range of internet developments, which promise to make different types of information interact, be easier to locate and enable users to manipulate the web to their needs. "The opportunities to match up information and services online are coming into view now, with the likes of Google Maps," said Miller. Dave Errington, Talis CEO said Talis will be focusing on its core library automation tools, but looking to develop its applications into a platform for wider information management needs. "We are re-purposing our technology to suit these issues."
