British Library has digital vision
British Library chief executive Lynne Brindley has called for a national Digital Library to cope with the changing demands of digital publishing, and to keep British arts, business, education and science competitive.
Launching the British Library's strategy for 2005-2008, Brindley outlined how the UK will have to adapt to a changing information landscape and how the role of the library will inevitably change.
Archiving the internet is now the core focus of BL strategy, as it positions itself to be the key developer of "a digital research information infrastructure".
"Our strategy must be to collect for the future," said Brindley. "In many ways, digital material is more fragile than physical material and if we don't manage it effectively it won't survive for future generations."
A BL digital library is already being constructed, with an e-journals legal deposit pilot project underway. The British Digital Library is described as "tamper proof", with all content that enters the library digitally signed and catalogued. An offline copy will also be made in case of a major system blackout.
