May 21--BALTIMORE -- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, the heavy favorite in Saturday's Preakness Stakes and a popular choice to become horse racing's first Triple Crown winner since 1978, suffered life-threatening injuries to his right hind ankle a hundred yards into the race and now faces surgery and uncertain chances for recovery. "It was like twisting your ankle at 40 miles an hour," said Dr. Larry Bramlage, an equine surgeon who helped oversee Barbaro's emergency treatment at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course before a record crowd of 118,402 racing fans, many of them horrified at the sight of the injury. The animal, which will never race again, was taken by ambulance Saturday night to the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary hospital in Kennett Square, Pa., about 80 miles northeast of the track in Baltimore.
