May 19--A federal panel Thursday recommended approval of the first cervical cancer vaccine, which holds the promise of reducing the second-most prevalent form of cancer in women by two-thirds.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which almost always follows such recommendations, is expected to make a final decision by June 8 on Gardasil, made by Merck & Co. of Whitehouse Station.
In the United States, an estimated 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and 10 women die each day from the disease.
