A pulmonary ablation technique maintains heart rhythm in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation without the need for drugs, researchers reported in the March 2 New England Journal of Medicine. Atrial fibrillation, the most common cause of abnormal heart rhythm, can increase the risk of heart failure, stroke, and death. This study included 146 patients who had atrial fibrillation for an average of four years.
