May 19--What makes a teacher extraordinary?

If it's arranging to tutor a student who has a difficult home life, or challenging students while making them laugh, then Katy Coffelt qualifies.

Amid a drumroll and cheers, Coffelt, an eighth-grade language arts teacher at Jay M. Robinson Middle School, was crowned Harris Teacher of the Year for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Thursday night.

"I'm in amazing company tonight," said Coffelt, a teacher for 10 years who is in her fifth year at Jay M. Robinson. "The staff I work with and the students I teach are the people I have to thank."
