May 17--Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones called for a 1-cent tax rate cut Tuesday, something he said the county can afford because of new state lottery money. The proposed cut comes a year after county commissioners passed a 10.6 percent tax rate hike, about 8 cents. County commissioners used much of the money to give Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools a $26 million budget increase, fulfilling a campaign pledge by Democrats who control the county board. That 1.2 percent decrease would save the owner of a $175,000 house just under $18 annually on county taxes. Residents of the unincorporated part of the county would see an additional .071-cent rate cut on their police district tax. The budget also puts $26 million into a new account meant to pay construction costs as projects are built instead of borrowing the money. The board said that would save the county interest costs.
