May 16--STATESVILLE -- Savannah Lee Campbell was supposed to appear in court Monday on a charge of threatening a Statesville woman. Instead, he spent the day in the Iredell County jail, accused of running down the woman's 11-year-old son and killing the boy's 10-year-old friend on Mother's Day as the pair walked along a sidewalk in south Statesville. The boy who died was dragged 44 feet, Statesville Police Chief Stephen Hampton said, and Campbell tried to drive away with the child's body still pinned underneath his vehicle. The 56-year-old Troutman man is charged with second-degree murder.
