JACKSON -- In 1998, Howard McMillan retired as president and COO from Deposit Guaranty National Bank, then the state's largest lender, after almost 40 years of service. He was looking forward to a life of leisure, mixed with charitable service.
Today, instead of hitting the links, he's working harder than ever for much less pay. He's dean of the Else School of Management at Millsaps College in Jackson, where he has served as the executive-in-residence since 2002. He's the governor-appointed director of the Mississippi Small Business Disaster Bridge Loan Program, established to help with post-Katrina recovery. For that role, he's paid a dollar a year.
