May 16--The Kentucky football team was hit with a double dose of bad news yesterday, as top cornerback Bo Smith was dismissed from the team and converted basketball player and wide receiver Ravi Moss was suspended for the first six games of the season by the NCAA.
Smith, who made 32 career starts and was named the team's Most Outstanding Defensive Player by the coaches following last season, was kicked off the squad by head coach Rich Brooks for a violation of team rules.
A release issued by the school did not reveal what the violation was, and Brooks said in the release that he would have no further comment on the matter.
Moss joined the football team during the start of spring practice on March 29 and participated in two practices before deciding not to pursue football any longer. He then participated in a "barnstorming" game and two autograph sessions with the other UK basketball seniors and was paid for those appearances.
Moss then had a change of heart and returned to the football team on April 15, but the NCAA ruled that Moss must sit out six games for violating its rule that does not allow student-athletes with remaining eligibility to market their athletic reputations.
Moss said in the release that he will remain with the team despite the suspension.
