A spokesperson for kosher meat processor Agriprocessors Inc.--in response to a campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to discredit the company in the Jewish community--in told Feedstuffs that the company's slaughter operations are kosher, humane and supported by independent audits.
PETA's video, "If this is kosher ...," clandestinely filmed in Agriprocessors' plant in Postville, Iowa, shows what would be perceived as horrific beef cattle slaughter practices and is being distributed to the Jewish community worldwide. The spokesman said he thinks the video will have little or no impact on the company, its customers and the Jewish community.
The video is being promoted by PETA and Jonathan Safran Foer, an author known for a Holocaust-inspired novel, and is based on an undercover PETA investigation in 2004 and a U.S. Department of Agriculture investigation last year (Feedstuffs, April 24).
USDA found that Agriprocessors has corrected any deficiencies related to the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act that PETA accuses the company of committing.
Company spokesperson Mike Thomas, in an interview conducted too late to be included in the original story in Feedstuffs, said the video is disingenuous in that "most of the video is not Agriprocessors," showing footage that couldn't have been and was not taken at Postville.
He said the company has no idea where the footage came from or why it was included.
He also said the USDA report cited is an interim report, and the final report has not yet been released.
