2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Date in fleet: April 10-18 As-tested price: $71,595 Powertrain: 7.0-liter V8; rwd, six-speed manual Output: 505 hp @ 6300 rpm, 470 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm Curb weight: 3130 lbs Fuel Economy (EPA combined/AW observed): 19.35/15.9 mpg
HART: What is most amazing about the Z06 is just how manageable its 505 hp is, and in such a comfortable car.
It would be nice, though, if the Z06 had a design that separated it from the standard Vette, as only real car aficionados will notice the differences at a distance.
My only other seat time in the Z06 was lapping at the GM proving grounds last fall on a bitter cold day. We could barely get much heat in the tires, but it was still a blast to hammer this snarling beast around the track. The pedals are set up great, the shifter is tight with nice, short throws, and the car feels wonderfully balanced through fast corners. And the sound coming from that small-block is one of the great road sounds available from a production car.
