NY/NJ extends subsidized barge link: container-on-barge service between Brooklyn, Newark gets another $2.3 million. (Port Authority of New York and New Jersey)

A subsidized container-on-barge service linking Brooklyn's Red Hook terminal with New Jersey railheads has been extended for a third year.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved $2.3 million for the service -- $1.2 million to keep the service operating through December, and up to $1.1 million in state funds to used as a match for federal money.

Some of the federal money will be used for a study of how to improve the service, including whether the existing lift-on/lift-off barge service should be changed to roll on/roll off.

To implement the study's recommendations, up to $6 million in capital funds will be sought from the federal government …
