4 die after their car collides with oncoming truck during police chase.

ISESAKI, Gunma -- Four people died after a car they were riding in collided with an oncoming truck while being chased by police early Tuesday, police said.

A local police spokesman defended the chase. "It was conducted in an appropriate and legal way," said Toshio Sekiya, deputy director of Isesaki Police Station.

Those who died have been identified as Masaru Otsuka, 22, who was driving the car, Mitsuru Teshigawara, 24, Anna Inagaki, 21, and Mai Ishii, 21.
