APATHY and indifference were the order of the day recently when the staff of general wards in Hospital Universiti Kebangsaaan Malaysia (HUKM) failed to live up to their promise to an organ donor's family with regard to his organs.

They promised his family that harvesting the donor's organs would be a hassle-free procedure. But it was only upon his death that the staff started looking at his organ donation form and performed blood screening to ascertain his blood group despite the fact that he was a regular blood donor.
