2006 Lexus LS 430
Date in fleet: April 12-19 As-tested price: $69,059 Powertrain: 4.3-liter V8; rwd, six-speed automatic Output: 278 hp @ 5600 rpm, 312 lb-ft @ 3400 rpm Curb weight: 3990 lbs Fuel Economy (EPA combined/AW observed): 20.6/20.4 mpg
HART: The Lexus LS remains one of the smoothest, quietest rides out there. Several family members said how much the car "looks like a Mercedes.'' All enjoyed the quiet ride, the big back seat and the terrific sound system.
One little quibble: The adaptive cruise control seemed to pick different distances depending on, what, I couldn't figure out. It would let me practically run up on one vehicle while keeping me 100 yards clear of another. Not very confidence-inspiring. After several miles I just shut the thing off, figuring I could keep the thing around the posted speed limit myself.
If what we've seen at the auto shows are any indication, the new LS will trump this thing in just about every category. This car only has 278 hp, and while totally adequate, that's nowhere near enough power for a car competing in this class. So the new one will be bigger, more powerful and chock-full of more gadgetry, yet I'll be sad to see this old LS go.
