May 4--Joseph Cooper has laid six feet under at Miami's City Cemetery for almost 100 years. But on Sunday, he was the center of attention.
The African American Committee of Dade Heritage Trust hosted the 13th annual Procession and Commemorative Service, a program that honors the 162 black men, including Cooper, who were present on July 28, 1896, to vote for Miami to be incorporated as a city; in all, 386 men were present. On Nov. 18, 1908, Cooper, then 60, died while picking crops.
