May 3--Parents in Broward County will be able to choose from a wider menu of charter schools next year following a School Board decision Tuesday to accept more taxpayer-funded, privately run classrooms into the district.
The board agreed to expand the number of charter schools from 37 to 49 for 2006-07, even though Superintendent Frank Till was skeptical about whether they would do a satisfactory job educating kids.
"We don't have any choice" but to allow new charters, Till said after the meeting.
The state requires counties to pay for charter schools, in part to create an environment of competition in public education…
