April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and it starts off with good news: the number of children abused or neglected in 2004 was 34,000 fewer than the number of children who were victimized the year before. Still, 2004 saw 872,000 maltreatment cases, the majority of which involved neglect, and almost 1,500 child victims died. This information is provided by the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System.
For fiscal year 2006, $42.4 million in funding is available for community-based child abuse prevention programs plus $27 million to help improve states' child protective services.
