Marine flier Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was in real life a WW2 hero, awarded the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross for shooting down 22 Japanese planes. In TV life he (played by Robert Conrad) was the lead character in the late-1970s show Baa Baa Black Sheep, "based on" Colonel Boyington's own autobiography of the same name. Colonel Boyington, a 1934 graduate of the University of Washington, died in 1988. With the 20th anniversary of that death in mind, UW senior Andrew Everett proposed that a memorial to the heroic alumnus be erected on campus.
