On the occasion of the visit by Chinese president Hu Jintao to Britain in early November, the kingdom's cultural elites painted the town red for him. That is a figure of speech, but only just. Red being, naturally, the Chinese Communist Party's favorite color, prestige locations in London were illuminated by red floodlights.
