Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island is the most liberal Republican in the Senate. He has opposed the Bush administration--and conservatives--on Iraq, tax cuts, oil drilling, abortion, and gay marriage. Some of this is to be expected, as Rhode Island is about the farthest thing from a red state there is (Kerry won it by 21 points). Even so, Chafee's opposition to the confirmation of Samuel Alito is so outrageous that Ocean State Republicans should refuse to support his reelection this year. They have a viable alternative: Cranston mayor Steven Laffey, who is challenging Chafee in the GOP primary. Laffey has a record of attracting Democratic voters but is a genuine conservative who ...
