Steven Spielberg's latest movie, Munich, is a fully flowered specimen of these hate-yourself-first fantasies. At the Munich Olympic Games of 1972, Palestinian terrorists kidnapped and killed eleven Israeli athletes. Israeli agents patiently hunted down and killed the murderers. The only alternative was to lament and do nothing, as these men were beyond the reach of law. Justified retribution was one motive, and deterrence another. Who knows how many Israeli lives ...
