Apr. 29--Defensive tackle Seth Payne thought he was hearing a prank on Friday night.
Less than 24 hours before the NFL draft, Payne never expected to hear that Mario Williams, the defensive end out of North Carolina State, was his newest teammate.
Months of debate about Southern Cal running back Reggie Bush vs. Texas quarterback Vince Young ended when the Texans announced they had signed Williams and would select him with the No. 1 overall pick today in New York.
Payne, like many of his teammates, figured it was a lock that the Texans would select Bush.
"I think it's exciting," Payne said. "It's exciting that our team is willing to make a decision like that. It's easy to go with conventional wisdom, but to make a pick like this -- it's obvious they aren't worried about what people are saying.
"If this kid can live up to his potential, it could mean tremendous things for us. If he can be the caliber of a player (like a Reggie White or Bruce Smith), it's going to be great for our team."
