Of all the points of friction that could have roiled last week's summit meeting between George W. Bush and Hu Jintao--trade, North Korea, human rights--one caused hardly a ripple. The U.S. president brought up the topic of Taiwan, repeating to his Chinese counterpart the longstanding U.S. position that the cross-straight dispute be settled peacefully. Hu reiterated the mainland's position, that Taiwan is Chinese territory, and apparently little else was said by the two leaders on the island or the hugely sensitive issue of its sovereignty.
