Taipei, April 25, 2006 (CENS)--Taiwan's No.1 fabless house, MediaTek Inc., has contracted silicon-foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to make its chips for slim-type televisions, according to industry sources. Industry insiders pointed out that it's an eye-catching deal, requiring 0.13-micron process technology, because it came shortly after United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) announced a few days ago that it surrendered its last seat in MediaTek's board and would not hold any seat any more. MediaTek span off a few years ago from UMC as an independent chip design house, in which UMC held a 20% stake initially. UMC …
