Apr. 25--They saw photos of break-ins and windows covered with metal grates at the eastside Cochrane Middle School. At North Mecklenburg High they saw a sea of trailers, a cafeteria that has gobbled up classrooms, and teens learning trades in cramped 55-year-old classrooms. After six weeks studying data, the volunteers charged with figuring out how to pay for new schools and renovations in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are hitting the classrooms this week. Many said Monday that the school visits pack a punch that numbers can't convey. "You can hear '69 trailers,' but until you see what 69 mobile classrooms looks like, you just can't imagine," said Ginny Setzer, a retired teacher, after a tour of North Meck.
