from THE JAKARTA POST -- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 2006 -- PAGE 7 The March 15 decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations to create a UN Human Rights Council is an historic opportunity to improve the respect for human rights worldwide
The council is scheduled to begin its sessions in June with the election of its members beginning May 9. The Human Rights Council would constitute a new subsidiary body of the General Assembly, replacing the Commission for Human Rights that has been in existence since 1946. To enact the decision of the General Assembly the Commission will meet on March 27 in Geneva to formally dissolve itself through a resolution
Given the importance of human rights and the extent to which these changes will dramatically affect how things are done throughout the world, it would seem appropriate to do an objective evaluation and an honest self-assessment of the work of the Commission for Human Rights throughout its 60-year existence
