I approach my first issue of AARL with some trepidation. I am conscious of the long and fine tradition of this journal's previous editors: Dietrich Borchardt (1969-1984), John Horacek (1985-1989), Peter Biskup (1990-1997) and Peter Clayton (1997-2005). In a tribute in the June 1997 issue to Peter Biskup when he stepped down from the editorship of AARL the Chair of the Editorial Board, Eric Wainwright, noted 'the joys of editorship'. As the new Editor I look forward to partaking of these joys, which surely include the contact with you, the members of the profession, and to maintaining the fine tradition set by previous editors.
