Apr. 18--Maria Contreras enrolled her children in a charter school several years ago, and enrolled herself, if unknowingly, in an ongoing debate on public education and how best to improve it.
Charter schools - publicly-funded schools that operate without many of the restrictions binding their traditional counterparts - have existed in San Joaquin County for nearly a decade.
Recently released school comparisons rank many of the county's charter schools among the best in the state, an improvement over last year's marks.
Still, officials from traditional public schools approach charter schools warily. They caution that the campuses have not established a record of success, and worry that they siphon away talented students and important state dollars.
