Racecar driver Bill Lester recently made his Cup race debut as the first Black driver to qualify and compete in a race in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NACSAR's) top stock car series in nearly 20 years. Lester, a 45-year-old regular in
NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series since 2002, finished 38th out of a 43-car field at the Golden Corral 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In his No. 23 Dodge Charger, he qualified at 190.502 mph in the Nextel Cup series earning a 19th place starting spot for the Golden Corral 500.
The last Black person to qualify for a race in NASCAR's top series was driver Willy T. Ribbs in 1986.
