Humankind has been trying to re-create nature's wonders since the first cavemen prayed for rain. That didn't work so well. But in recent years, we've gotten better at designing systems that put the natural elements to work for us. Here are four ways we're pushing the envelope.
SURF'S UP
California native Tom Lochtefeld designed Waveloch, the most advanced wave-making pools in the world. With 84 locations from San Diego to Korea, he now makes perfect pipelines more than 3 meters high. The trick: shaping the wave by slanting the bottom of the pool in a gradual slope, and creating a trampolinelike surface for smooth landings.
